Dixie Plantation is a 9,000-acre plantation dedicated to sustainable forestry and improving habitat for a broad range of wildlife. The property is managed by a foundation created by Geraldine Livingston. This was the first property to enroll in Florida’s Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) Safe Harbor Program. Safe Harbor conserves RCWs and their habitat on private lands by not penalizing landowners who practice good land stewardship. Safe Harbor assures landowners that responsibilities under the Endangered Species Act will not increase if populations of RCWs increase in the future. Safe Harbor benefits both landowners and RCWs. A field tour of Dixie Plantation will follow the recognition program demonstrating what RCW management looks like on the ground and how it benefits landowners and is compatible with quail and timber management. There will also be a discussion of incentive programs available to landowners.
